Here is the description of this 2-day event:

Marlafiori

Two-Day Flower and Foliage Cane Workshop

Image

Make insanely complex flower canes without going nuts!

Using Marla’s speedy techniques, create intricate, complex flower canes, but skip the time-consuming drudgery of traditional millefiori. Make them fast, make them easy, and move on to the fun – combining them to create one-of-a-kind designs.

Learn versatile techniques to make a wide variety of flower canes, realistic or fantastic, along with exotic leaves, lacy ferns, reeds and palm fronds.

If making a sunflower were easier than making a buttercup, where would you stop?

This two-day workshop will be adapted to fit the skill level of the students. In addition to learning to make many intricate (but easy!) flower and foliage canes, students will be shown how to layer cane slices to make a seamless veneer, how to make earrings and beads, along with finishing techniques to achieve a perfect matte porcelain surface with no sanding or buffing.

Marlafiori Workshop Supply List

Since the focus of this workshop is technique, you just need basic clay tools:

  • Work surface.
  • Pasta machine*
  • Tissue blade & a wavy blade, if you have one.
  • Ruler.
  • Acrylic rod or brayer.
  • Needle tool.
  • Something to wrap up your canes.
  • Notebook & pen.
  • And clay!

I understand that clay preferences are strong. Bring your clay of choice. I will be showing how I make my jewelry, & I use Kato polyclay.

Conditioning your clay before the workshop will allow us to accomplish more. If you know how to make Skinner blends, you can make some ahead of time. If you don’t know how or don’t have time, don’t worry about it. If you make your blends ahead of time, leave them in a flat sheet.

You will need a background color of clay for your canes. I use translucent clay because I cut slivers of canes & layer them, but you can use an opaque background color if you have different plans for your canes, like making cane slice beads. Figure on a pound of background color.

Bring as many colors as you would like to use for your flowers, with contrasting colors. You should use a minimum of four ounces of clay for each flower or leaf that we make, & we will be making three or four flowers, along with a leaf, a fern and reeds.

If you have a picture of a flower that you would like to make, please bring that with you.

If there’s something on the list that you don’t have (other than clay!), please don’t worry about it – we’ll share.

*The tables at the art center will require that you bring a 1" thick piece of wood or catalog to place under your pasta machine so that your machine clamp will be properly secured. Alternately, bring c-clamps or bar clamps.

You can read a recent review of this workshop on this site.
I will inquire about pasta machine motors and let registrants know the answer. Marla said she will be bringing deli wrap for sale, too.

There are several hotels in the area of downtown or you can stay a bit further out near North Monroe Street and I-10. All hotels in these areas have easy access to the workshop site and there are a wide variety of budget, moderate and luxury accommodations available. If you are interested in car pooling or sharing a hotel room, I can to put you in touch with others from your general area and you can work out the details.

You can pay me one of these ways (please e-mail me for address info):
